Boutique hotel, Inn, Bed & Breakfast, Spa

Known for its magnificent horse studs and historic homesteads, the Upper Hunter is also Australia’s best kept wine secret – producing some of the finest wines in the world. Away from the tourist hurly-burly, this beautiful area offers visitors a relaxed and peaceful stay and a view of rural Australia that visitors often do not see. And in the middle of all of this is historic Segenhoe Inn, Luxury Boutique Hotel and B&B est. in 1837

The Inn is one of the few remaining Colonial buildings demonstrating the fine and enduring craftsmanship of the settlers of early days in Australia. Offering 9 beautifully decorated bedrooms and an ambience throughout the house that is reminiscent of gracious living of the past, a stay at the Inn is well suited to romantics and groups of friends or family who wish to make the Inn theirs for a night or weekend.

As the Inn is 24 hour licensed, and offers silver service and white linen dining, there is no need to venture out of a night and take any risks on the road after a few glasses of ale.

Fantasise with a cocktail in the beautiful formal parlour, relax in the home theatre listening to music, reading or watching a favourite dvd or interacting with new found friends or wander about the immaculate gardens. The Inn provides for Weddings, Murder Mysteries, Pyjama Parties (great for hens nights), beauty weekends with special guest speaker and any other special occasion function or theme of your choosing. Any occasion can be catered for.

Aberdeen

Situated in the midst of pastoral & agricultural countryside, Aberdeen is a small township between Muswellbrook and Scone. It is 273km north of Sydney with a population of around 1750.

In 1823, British MP, Thomas MacQueen, read a favourable report on the colony's rural prospects. An advocate of transporting both capital and skilled workmen to the colony he invested in his own principles in 1825, sending to Australia stock, machinery, supplies, artisans, their families and overseer Peter McIntyre who chose the land around Aberdeen, naming MacQueen's estate Segenhoe after MacQueen's birthplace (Segenhoe Manor in Bedfordshire)

Segenhoe was a large property employing about 100 convicts. In the 1820s it was used as a base for explorers such as Thomas Mitchell, Edmund Kennedy and Allan Cunningham. The latter followed Dangar's route north from Dart Brook in 1827 and went on to 'discover' the Darling Downs and the overland route to the penal colony at Moreton Bay (the future site of Brisbane).

When MacQueens' financial situation in England declined he moved to Australia, living at Segenhoe from 1834 to 1838. The value of his property was inflated when he persuaded the government to lay out the township of Aberdeen in 1838 by the river crossing. The town was named after MacQueen's friend George Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen. The name also reflects the preponderance of Scottish landowners who took up the early grants

Segenhoe & Lake Glenbawn Recreation -
Two kilometres north of Aberdeen is Lake Glenbawn, a popular spot for waterskiing, swimming, sailing, canoeing and sailboarding. Anglers will find catfish, bass and golden perch. The foreshores consist of open woodland with an abundance of birdlife (galahs, eastern rosellas, pelicans, king parrots etc) and both kangaroos and wallaroos to be seen in the early morning and at dusk.

The richest horse country in the world, the area as been responsible for the birth of many Melbourne Cup winners.
