"Accommodation was comfortable and clean. Good base for exploring Provence. Quiet surrounds. Although streets were very narrow, we managed to find parking for our 4-wheel drive."

Cottage

The stone walls of the original house have had new tiled concrete floors laid and a third floor and balcony, overlooking the street, added. The ground floor entrance hall gives access to a large double bedroom with a capacious built-in wardrobe. Over the hallway and through a large laundry/utility room there is a bathroom with bath (shower over), bidet, WC and hand basin.

On the second floor a large bed-sitting room and another bedroom containing a double bed and a single bed open onto the long balcony with glazed overhanging canopy. There is a table on the balcony at which you can sit and watch both the Pernois going about their daily activities and the occasional visitor, travel guide in hand. There is also a shower room with WC and hand basin. There are portable fans for your improved comfort on very hot days.

The house is managed locally by a French lady who lives nearby.

The first floor has a large living/dining room and a separate kitchen. The cooking top has one electric hotplate and three gas burners that are supplied from a gas cylinder. There is also an electric oven and a microwave.

In the living room there is a portable radio with CD and cassette player, a colour television and telephone. The telephone service allows local and all incoming calls. For distance and international calls your own phone card is needed. Off the stair hall on this floor there is a toilet with WC and hand basin.

Locality

Our cottage in Provence is central to the valley of the Sorgue river which is the closed valley (from the Latin Vallis Clausa) which gives the départment its name. The source of the river is the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse at the base of a sheer cliff face from where massive volumes of water pour forth, particularly at times of flood. The waters from the fountain feed a vast natural irrigation system as branches flow through farmland to the Rhône river near Avignon

.

The Vaucluse is one of the smallest départements in France but one of the most prestigious because of the richness of its historical, artistic and cultural heritage. At VAISON-LA-ROMAINE there are extensive remains of the Roman occupation, including a bridge, theatre, public baths and residences. At ORANGE there is a well-preserved Roman theatre. AVIGNON, replete with its architectural and artistic treasures from papal days, is now host to one of the great music and theatre festivals of France. CARPENTRAS houses one of the oldest synagogues in France dating from the 15th century when the Jewish population was under papal protection. There are important archeological museums and galleries throughout the département and a large number of cultural festivals, especially through the summer.

Among other treasures to be discovered and enjoyed are: the impressive red ochre cliffs of ROUSSILLON; Roman churches and Gothic cathedrals; Renaissance chateaux and classic residences; fields of sunflower and lavender along the banks of the mighty Rhône river; and the wonderful panorama from the summit of Mont Ventoux.

Property

Pernes, a well-preserved small town standing at the western edge of the Plateau de Vaucluse, is known for its many fountains, in particular for three of its finest ornamental examples: the 18th century Fontaine du Cormoran, the Gran'Font or Fontaine Reboul and the Fontaine du Gigot. This ancient capital of the Comtat Venaissin and former papal State has some magnificent architecture including the 14th and 16th century fortified gates opening onto pleasant lanes and squares. The last vestiges of the wall that protected the Counts of Toulouse is to be seen in the Port Villeneuve with its two crenellated towers. Other fine ancient buildings include the Tour Ferrande which contains the oldest frescos in France (circa 1275), the 16th century Hôtel de Vichet, and the 12th century Tour de l'Horloge with its campanile
